Women’s singles lost its fifth and seventh seeds at the 2022 Gwangju YONEX Korea Masters following the unexpected defeats of Pornpawee Chochuwong and Michelle Li to unfancied opponents.
Chochuwong, runner-up at Korea Open 2022 just three days ago, was on court for no more than 36 minutes, the 24-year-old Thai succumbing 21-17 21-6 to world No.50 Asuka Takahashi.
Li, who has struggled for form since returning from injury, suffered a bigger upset against Myanmar’s Thet Htar Thuzar, losing 22-20 21-16 to her world No.82 challenger. Thet’s victory in her first meeting with the Canadian helped her progress to the last 16 of only her second HSBC BWF World Tour Super 300 event.
Another surprise result saw mixed doubles runners-up at last week’s Korea Open, Ko Sung Hyun/Eom Hye Won go down to Terry Hee Yong Kai and Tan Wei Han. The fifth seeds, winners in 2018 as a pair, lost 18-21 21-19 16-21 in the first match of the day.
Korea Open mixed doubles winner Tan Kian Meng’s good luck continued to serve him well as he and partner Tan Wee Kiong overcame men’s doubles third seeds Pramudya Kusumawardana/Yeremia Erich Yoche Yacob Rambitan 21-11 16-21 22-20.
