Macau Open: Wangchaoren Surges Back

Kantaphon Wangcharoen broke a long spell of below-par performances by making his first final in over nine years.

Wangchaoren, a World Championships bronze medallist with a career-high ranking of No.12, has since slid to No.66 on the back of a series of early exits. This year he has had to play the qualifying rounds of even the Super 300 events on the HSBC BWF World Tour .

On Saturday in Macau, however, Wangchaoren made his first final since the PRINCESS SIRIVANNAVARI Thailand Masters in February 2017 by beating Indonesia’s Muhamad Yusuf 22-20 21-15.

In the final, the Thai takes on Chinese young gun Hu Zhe An, who powered his way past Malaysia’s Eogene Ewe 21-15 21-18.

The women’s singles final will be an all-Korea affair between Kim Ga Eun and her namesake Park Ga Eun. Top seed Kim fought her way past Han Qian Xi 22-20 14-21 21-12, while Park had a smoother ride to the final, beating Ashmita Chaliha 21-17 21-9.

Young Indonesian men’s doubles pair Ali Faathir Rayhan/Devin Artha Wahyudi made their first Super 300 final beating Malaysia’s Low Hang Yee/Ng Eng Cheong 21-12 21-12. The Indonesians face Korea’s Jin Yong/Lee Jong Min, who beat another Malaysian pair, Chia Weijie/Teo Ee Yi, in straight games.
