We present you some intriguing storylines from the Super 500 SATHIO GROUP Australian Open 2026.
Ten former winners are in the field.
Among them are five doubles specialists who previously won with different partners.
Huang Dong Ping (with Wang Yi Lyu in 2019), Zhang Shu Xian (Zheng Yu, 2022), Kang Min Hyuk (Seo Sung Jae, 2023), Kim So Yeong (Kong Hee Yong, 2023) and Febriana Dwipuji Kusuma (Amallia Cahaya Pratiwi, 2024) all return with new pairs.
Huang and Feng Yan Zhe, champions in 2023 and Zhang (now with Jia Yi Fan) are the only top seeds carrying winning experience into this edition.
China are one of three countries to bag mixed doubles – Korea and Malaysia being the others – starting 2016.
They aced five of those eight editions – their 62.5 per cent success rate highest of any category during that period.
No reigning champions are back to defend their crowns, except women’s doubles fifth seeds Rachel Allessya Rose/Febi Setianingrum.
If successful, they will be the first women’s pair in 33 years since Australians Lisa Campbell/Amanda Hardy in 1993 to triumph twice in a row.
Thailand, still searching for a women’s singles winner, possess two seeds this time – Pornpawee Chochuwong (No.2) and Supanida Katethong (7). The Thais have not had a finalist in the discipline after Nichaon Jindapon in 2013.
Likewise, Chinese Taipei have seeded hopes Chou Tien Chen (1), Lin Chun-Yi (2) and Chi Yu Jen (5) in men’s singles, a category they are yet to taste glory in.
Their longest wait between titles is in women’s singles, in which they are also able to count on three seeds – Chiu Pin Chian (5), Lin Hsiang Ti (6) and Huang Yu Hsun (8). Their only previous champion in the discipline was Huang Chia Chi in 2004.
Australia remain the sole country to complete a sweep, accomplishing it in 1995.
Chinese Taipei are the only squad with seeds in all the five departments this year.
An Alwi Farhan victory will move Indonesia clear as the most successful nation in men’s singles with eight titles, one ahead of China.
Standout Stat: The Chinese continuously produced winners at every edition from 2011 until 2024. They didn’t enter in any discipline last season.
