Syed Modi: Arin Serves Turkish Delight

It was a historic day for Neslihan Arin in Lucknow, India as she powered into the Syed Modi India International 2025 final beating top seed Unnati Hooda.

The Turkish shuttler impressively clinched victory in straight games under 40 minutes – 21-15 21-10 – to end home hopes in women’s singles. Teenager Tanvi Sharma had fallen 21-17 21-16 to Hina Akechi in an earlier semifinal.

The 31-year-old Arin’s triumph marks a significant milestone – she is now the first Turkish player to reach a title match since the HSBC BWF World Tour was introduced in 2018. Prior to that during the SuperSeries era, no athlete from Turkey had advanced this far at any Grand Prix-level event or higher.

Breakthrough for Arin.

Arin could make more history at Babu Banarasi Das Indoor Stadium in a first meeting against Japanese youngster Akechi, who will play her second Super 300 final having finished runner-up to compatriot Tomoka Miyazaki at last year’s Orleans Masters.

In mixed doubles, former world No.1 Sapsiree Taerattanachai celebrated a long-awaited return to a final since her split with Dechapol Puavaranukroh.

The 21-10 21-12 win over Indonesians Marwan Faza/Aisyah Salsabila Putri Pranata alongside Pakkapon Teeraratsakul means the match against Dejan Ferdinansyah/Bernadine Anindya will be her first title bout since losing the Thailand Open final in May 2024.

OTHER HIGHLIGHTS

  • Five other players will appear in their first final at this level: Hong Kong China’s Jason Gunawan in men’s singles and Kang Khai Xing/Aaron Tai and Chia Wei Jie/Lwi Sheng Hao in an all-Malaysian men’s doubles showdown.
  • Gunawan faces Srikanth Kidambi, one of two remaining home contenders, the other being defending women’s doubles champions Treesa Jolly/Gayatri Pullela Gopichand.
