Taipei Open: Young Compatriot Lin Shocks Wang

Men’s singles second seed Wang Tzu Wei’s journey was abruptly ended by Lin Chun-yi in the YONEX Taipei Open 2022 quarterfinals.

World No.16 Wang, runner-up to Chou Tien Chen in 2017, lost to his 23-year-old 78th-ranked countryman 21-13 19-21 21-10 in a battle that lasted 59 minutes.

Lin, already an HSBC BWF World Tour Super 300 event winner at US Open 2019, will now meet Singapore Open 2022 silver medallist Kodai Naraoka in the semifinals. The Japanese defeated Thailand’s Khosit Phetpradab 15-21 21-14 21-14 to advance.

Hong Kong China’s Ng Tsz Yau will contest two semifinals. She and mixed doubles partner Lee Chun Hei Reginald beat home pair Ye Hong Wei/Lee Chia Hsin 12-21 21-13 21-18 in the first Court 3 match. Ng later returned with Tsang Hiu Yan to win their women’s doubles quarterfinal 21-16 20-22 21-18 against Indians Tanisha Crasto/Shruti Mishra.

Ng played two three-game matches.

Saena Kawakami, winner in 2017, is through to the last four with a 21-9 12-21 21-16 win over Goh Jin Wei.

♦ Local superstars Chou, Tai Tzu Ying and Lee Yang/Wang Chi-Lin all progressed with wins over fellow Chinese Taipei shuttlers.
