Indonesia Open: ‘There Can Only Be One Winner’

The first shock result of the SimInvest Indonesia Open 2021 saw the ousting of No.7 seeds Thom Gicquel/Delphine Delrue, who fell to young Indonesians Adnan Maulana/Mychelle Crhystine Bandaso 21-17 21-17 today.

The loss rules the YONEX Swiss Open 2021 champions out of the HSBC BWF World Tour Finals 2021. To qualify for the season-ender, the world No.11 pair would have needed to go further into the tournament.

“We knew it was going to be difficult to get into the World Tour Finals. We knew we had to make the finals here,” said a disappointed Gicquel. “There can only be one winner. We didn’t play how we wanted to.”

The French pair got things off to a great start, with a healthy 7-2 lead in the opener, but the Indonesian duo stepped on the gas to fight back and turn the tide.

“We started really well. We had a good plan,” said Delrue. “We just couldn’t stick to it until the end. They played well, with a lot of speed and we didn’t control the match with speed on our side. It wasn’t our best match.”

The conditions inside the Bali International Convention Centre were a little tricky for Gicquel and Delrue.

“The hall was slow. We had to attack a lot but it was hard to finish each point. They defended well and we started getting frustrated on the attack. We were trying to play at speed and it wasn’t a good idea,” conceded Gicquel.
