The New Zealand Open is one of only two HSBC BWF World Tour Super 300 tournaments in the Oceania region and Auckland plays host to the tournament the week before the Australian Open.
Held since 1990, the tournament started as the International Challenge level of tournament of the BWF tournament structure at the time. The New Zealand Open were upgraded in 2016 to a BWF Grand Prix Gold tournament and has been hosted since then at the North Shore Events Centre, Auckland.
