Indonesia Open: ‘Ikkyu’ in First Super 1000 Semifinal

Panitchaphon ‘Ikkyu’ Teeraratsakul’s memorable season continued to blossom, with the Thai making his first HSBC BWF World Tour Super 1000 semifinal at the POLYTRON Indonesia Open 2026.

The world No.22 has had a breakout year on the World Tour, starting with a runner-up place at the Indonesia Masters at the Istora. Two more finals followed.

On Friday the left-hander outplayed Singapore Open champion Alex Lanier — another player in red-hot form — after a mid-match slump.

“It’s so hard to play in those conditions, so hard to lift, and I think it fits extremely well to his game,” said Lanier. “Today I made too many mistakes, I made too many enforced errors and I think also tactically I didn’t play the way I wanted. I knew what to do, but I was not able to do it, and sometimes that’s how it is.

“He’s good at the net, and he has a good smash, definitely. So when everything is working, and when you lift short, he’s very good and very powerful. So yeah, I’m not surprised that he’s there at this level, because on the whole it’s very, very hard to play him. He’s very good.”

The other semifinal will feature veteran Chou Tien Chen against rising star Victor Lai.

Victor Lai

Lai had his quarterfinal mostly under control against Toma Junior Popov, surging ahead to the finishing point winning 12 of the last 13 points.

“I’m pretty happy, little bit on the luckier side of the draw, with Kunlavut injured,” Lai said. “No seeds in my quarter, but I just play whoever’s in front of me. I’m really happy with the way I played today, because in the second game he came back, he had a lot of momentum, but I was able to stop it and change it my way.

“This is my first time in Istora. The last two matches were the loudest I’ve ever played. It was very very hard to focus. You can’t hear your coach too well, and even your own thoughts… you’re thinking something and suddenly you hear a huge roar. It’s a natural human thing to look.”

Sim Yu Jin

In women’s singles, Sim Yu Jin earned her first Super 1000 semifinal place with a comfortable straight-games win over Tomoka Miyazaki. Sim takes on third seed Akane Yamaguchi, while her compatriot An Se Young faces familiar rival Chen Yu Fei in the top half.

“I can’t believe this, I’m so happy,” said Sim.

“My opponent was really fast, so I had to keep up my speed and I tried to keep up the attack. The drift due to the aircon is quite strong so it’s hard to control the shuttle.”
