Singapore Open: Patience, Power and a Stunning Upset

Jimmy Wong and Cheng Su Yin today did what no other Malaysian pair have managed in a Super 750 first round – defeat Feng Yan Zhe and Huang Dong Ping.

And they did it in only their second tournament together.

The young Malaysians, aged just 23 and 22 respectively, stunned the world No.1s 23-21 21-16 at KFF Singapore Open 2026. Remarkably, only last week Wong and Cheng had exited their debut tournament together, the Malaysia Masters, in the opening round.

“We are really happy with the result,” said Wong post-match, smiling with the calmness of someone who had not quite processed what had just happened. “In our first tournament, we didn’t perform that well but we tried to bounce back here and we managed to do it.”

Against a pair as experienced and explosive as Feng and Huang, many expected the Malaysians to be overwhelmed. Instead, Wong unleashed fearless smashes with conviction while Cheng quietly controlled the tempo behind him.

Ironically, their winning formula was not built purely on aggression.

“The main key was patience,” Wong explained. “We had to stay patient throughout while also being aggressive at the right moments.”

Cheng revealed their game plan was simply to stay calm rather than force the issue against the Chinese stars who have lost only three times to Malaysian pairs since teaming up in 2023.

“They are the No.1 seeds and very difficult opponents,” she said. “I told my partner we needed to be patient from the back court and wait for the right opportunities.”

For someone who already owns experience from a Super 750 final at the 2024 China Masters, Cheng might easily have tried to over-guide her new partner. Instead, she deliberately kept things simple.

“I didn’t want to put extra pressure on him,” she laughed. “I just told him to do our best and keep the focus.”

Simple advice, stunning outcome against a tandem who have lost only thrice all season.

And perhaps the most dangerous part for the rest of the field this week? The duo insist they are only getting started.

“We are ready to go again,” enthused Wong.
