India Open: Sindhu Begins New season with Renewed Focus and New Role

Pusarla V. Sindhu enters the YONEX-SUNRISE India Open 2026 not only as one of the tournament’s leading contenders, but also in a new leadership role within the sport.

Speaking at the pre-tournament press conference in New Delhi on Monday, the two-time Olympic medallist spoke in detail about being appointed Chair of the BWF Athletes’ Commission for the 2026-2029 period, a body she has previously been part of as a member.

Pusarla said her experience within the commission has given her a clear understanding of the importance of athlete representation and the responsibility that comes with leading the body.

“I have been part of the Athletes’ Commission earlier, so I understand the role and the responsibilities,” Pusarla said. “As chair, my focus is on being the voice of the athletes, listening to their concerns and making sure their views are represented at the right platforms.”

She emphasised that the commission plays a key role in bridging communication between players and administrators, and that her priority will be to strengthen that dialogue.

“It’s important that athletes feel heard,” she added. “My role is to bring their perspectives forward and work together to create a better environment for the players.”

Pusarla endured a difficult 2025 season, only reaching the quarterfinals of the YONEX-SUNRISE India Open 2025, the TotalEnergies BWF World Championships2025 as well as the LIN-NING China Masters2025, before taking a break in October 2025 to recover from a foot injury.

However, her early 2026 season signs are positive following a podium finish in Malaysia last week.

“Coming back from an injury takes time and patience,” she said. “I’m focusing on getting fitter with each tournament and building confidence step by step.”

Sindhu also touched upon working with coach Irwansyah Adi Pratama, saying the collaboration has brought fresh ideas and renewed motivation as she continues to adapt her game.

“Every new coaching partnership brings learning,” Pusarla said. “We are working on improving different aspects of my game, and I’m enjoying the process.”

As she prepares for her round one match against Vietnam’s Nguyen Thuy Linh on Wednesday Sindhu said she remains committed to balancing her role as an athlete with her new responsibilities off the court, aiming to contribute to the sport both through performance and leadership.
