The 2025 season saw a record number of first-time HSBC BWF World Tour champions – 41 in total.
Here’s a look at some of the most notable breakthroughs.
Jason Teh – Thailand Masters
After finishing runner-up at the Macau Open and Syed Modi India International last year, Teh excelled in Bangkok, defeating China’s Wang Zheng Xing to become the first Singaporean to top a podium after Loh Kean Yew’s Spain Masters triumph in 2024.
Jason Gunawan – Syed Modi India International
In his debut final, Gunawan overcame home favourite Srikanth Kidambi 21-16 8-21 22-20, marking Hong Kong China’s first men’s singles World Tour title in over a year. The young shuttler has been competing on the circuit since 2023.
Chiu Pin Chian – Korea Masters
Chiu’s title carries extra significance as she is only the second Chinese Taipei women’s singles player after Tai Tzu Ying to win a World Tour event.
Yeo Jia Min – German Open
Yeo overcame “good friend” Nguyen Thuy Linh 21-16 21-17 for her career’s biggest victory, which also marked Singapore’s first World Tour women’s singles title.
Lee Fang Chih/Lee Fang Jen – Canada Open
After two previous final losses, way back in 2023, the twins who are World Tour regulars broke through in all-Chinese Taipei men’s doubles title match against Chang Ko Chi/Po Li Wei 21-19 21-19.
Junaidi Arif/Yap Roy King – Macau Open
Similarly, the Malaysians won their first tournament two years after pairing up, impressively against top seeds Sabar Karyaman Gutama/Moh Reza Isfahani Pahlevi.
Hsieh Pei Shan/Hung En-Tzu – Taipei Open
Hsieh and Hung’s breakthrough also ended Chinese Taipei’s 17-year wait for a women’s doubles crown at their home tournament. The duo later added the Macau Open to their trophy collection.
Robin Tabeling – German Open
The veteran Dutchman, best known for his partnership with Selena Piek, finally tasted World Tour glory with Dane Alexandra Boje. They beat Indonesians Rehan Naufal Kusharjanto/Gloria Emanuelle Widjaja 21-17 21-12, three years after Tabeling’s only previous final at the 2022 French Open.
