Man Wei Chong and Kai Wun Tee delighted fans with a historic victory at the PERODUA Malaysia Masters 2025, ending a decade-plus wait for a men’s doubles title on home soil.
The last time Malaysia claimed a men’s doubles crown in front of their adoring fans was the Malaysia Open 2014 courtesy of Goh V Shem/Lim Khim Wah.
You have to go back one year before that for the last men’s doubles pair to salute at the Malaysia Masters, also Goh V Shem/Lim Khim Wah.
Man and Tee accomplished the feat against senior compatriots and former world champions Aaron Chia/Soh Wooi Yik 12-21 21-15 16-21 in an all-Malaysian final. The victory avenged Man/Tee’s loss at the Malaysia Masters 2023 to Kang Min Hyuk and Seo Seung Jae of Korea.
“It’s a breakthrough for us as we lost in the final two years ago,” said Man.
“The match is more important for us even if playing with teammates. We are opponents on the court but brothers off the court. We just had to be well prepared as discussed,” said Tee.
It is their second Super 500 title this year on the HSBC BWF World Tour after triumphing at the DAIHATSU Indonesia Masters 2025 in January.
“I think Malaysia’s men’s doubles is getting better. [Goh] Sze Fei and [Nur] Izzuddin will be ranked world No.1 next week. This is a good thing for Malaysia,” added Man.
Man/Tee have now prevailed over Chia/Soh at their last two meetings, including January’s Indonesia Masters.
Despite the loss, Chia and Soh said the overall performance of Malaysia’s men’s doubles unit was very satisfying.
“It [a Malaysian men’s doubles victory] is something that we haven’t experienced for a long time. Now we are back here again with an all-Malaysian final,” said Chia.
“We’re thankful that we have a great coach in Herry Iman Pierngadi, a legend who has taken us to another level,” chimed in Soh.

China swept the four other finals with Li Shi Feng securing the only title not certain to go the way of his homeland at the start of the day. He was too good for India’s Kidambi Srikanth 21-11 21-9 for his first gold medal of the season.
“I didn’t know this was the first win for China’s men’s singles at the Malaysia Masters. Since it’s a Super 500 tournament, I thought someone from China would have claimed the title before.
“But it’s a big relief to come out as the champion and it feels great. I now need to move on from this moment and start preparing for the next tournament.
“The result may seem perfect but there were mistakes throughout the match. It’s impossible to be hundred per cent perfect on court, so I’ll take time to reflect and work on those areas,” said Li.
Despite the score line Kidambi had a positive outlook on the week. “There was a point in my career when I was used to standing on the podium. To be back again on the podium feels really special,” he said.
Wang Zhi Yi and Han Yue played out the match of the day with the top two seeds trading blows throughout. The world No.2 proving stronger at the end, winning 13-21 21-13 21-18 to successfully defend her Malaysia Masters crown.
It’s her third straight final in Malaysia having also finished runner-up to An Se Young at the PETRONAS Malaysia Open 2025 in January.
“People keep saying that Malaysia is a lucky place for me. I love the weather, food and fans, it’s been amazing playing in Malaysia,” she said.
