Ratchanok Intanon moved a step closer to claiming a fifth World Tour title on Malaysian soil after prevailing 24-26 24-22 21-12 over Michelle Li in 77 minutes in the PERODUA Malaysia Masters 2025 quarterfinals.
The Thai has a certain affinity with the Axiata Arena having previously lifted the Malaysian Open and Malaysian Masters crowns twice each.
She used that to her advantage when it mattered most to save four match points in the second game before eventually pulling away in the third.
“I really enjoy playing in Malaysia. It feels like my second home because I have so many Malaysian and international fans here supporting me,” said Intanon.
Intanon admitted she lost control of the shuttle in the first game as Li began applying more pressure, forcing a series of unforced errors that ultimately cost the Thai crucial points.
“I was trying to find my game and neutralise her shots because they were of such high quality and hard to get, so I was just trying to focus on every point and be quicker than she was,” said Li.
The Canadian started strong in the second game and looked like securing just her third win over Intanon, but the Thai gradually turned the tide and withstood the challenge.
“She [Li] has a strong mentality with good hands and footwork, especially after undergoing knee surgery.
“She still keeps great fitness even though she is already 33.
“But I had nothing to lose. If I lost today, I would just have to do my best in the future,” said Intanon.
She plays top seed Wang Zhi Yi in the semifinals.
