Smashing Stats: Taipei Open 2025

The HSBC BWF World Tour returns from a six-week break with YONEX Taipei Open 2025. Here are some storylines to know about the Super 300 event.

  • No nation other than Korea in 2013 has done a sweep. Hosts Chinese Taipei are the sole team with seeds in all five categories this year.
  • Chinese Taipei have had winners at the last seven editions – marking the longest such streak since Indonesia’s 11 in a row (1990-2002). There were no competitions in 1998 and 2001.
  • However, they have not produced women’s doubles champions after Cheng Wen Hsing/Chien Yu-Chin in 2008.
  • That may change this year, as they field an impressive five seeded pairs in the category.
  • Chinese Taipei have also never won mixed doubles outright, though they are represented by two seeded pairs this season.
  • Local hero Chou Tien Chen, the only top seed with previous success, is eyeing a historic milestone.
  • A fifth triumph would make Chou the joint-most successful player in tournament history, tied with compatriot Tai Tzu Ying.
  • Since Tai’s maiden victory in 2012, Korea are the only other nation to have won multiple women’s singles titles.
  • Korea’s Sim Yu Jin, who returns as defending champion alongside Lin Chun-Yi, is seeded second.
  • Should Sim defend her crown, Korea would move to the top of the all-time women’s singles leaderboard with eight titles.

Standout Stat: Women’s doubles is the only event to see a different nation win each of the last five editions – Japan (2018), Thailand (2019), Hong Kong China (2022), Korea (2023) and Indonesia (2024).

The unique run started with Nami Matsuyama and Chiharu Shida in 2018.
