China Masters: Gutama/Isfahani Closer to Finals Dream

Indonesia’s next boom men’s doubles pair Sabar Karyaman Gutama/Moh Reza Pahlevi Isfahani inched closer to securing their ticket to the HSBC BWF World Tour Finals 2024 with a clinical 21-10 21-16 win over world No.1 pair Liang Wei Keng/Wang Chang.

The demolition job brought a wave of excitement for the rapidly improved duo.

“We have mixed feelings because this victory could be our step to the HSBC BWF World Tour Finals, something that was previously unimaginable. So, if it passes, it will be like a dream come true,” said Gutama

“Hopefully this good journey continues into the next rounds. We compete with great motivation, and we want to win because the opportunity to go to the Finals is there, but we also don’t want to burden ourselves too much.”

Gutama referenced their last encounter against the Olympic silver medallists as being critical to the performance.

“Playing against them [at the Singapore Open] was an important lesson to be more confident today,” said Gutama.

“The key was trying to get the shuttle down and keep attacking them,” added Isfahani.

“With the drift of the shuttle being fast and the conditions on Court 1 quite windy, we had to get ahead of the attack to get our points.”

Liang and Wang are now out of contention for a place in the Top 8 in Hangzhou.

Gutama/Isfahani have moved into sixth in the preliminary #HSBCRaceToFinals standings and are almost assured of their Finals spot.

Only Aaron Chia/Soh Wooi Yik and Takuro Hoki/Yugo Kobayashi can now mathematically overtake them if they progress deep into the tournament.

Chinese Taipei’s Lee Yang and Wang Chi-Lin have the golden ticket as Olympic champions.
