Taipei Open: Lauren Lam Fights Into Quarterfinals

USA’s Lauren Lam made her second quarterfinal of the year, moving into the last eight of the YONEX Taipei Open 2022 with a hard-fought win over Eoon Qi Xuan.

Lam, a quarterfinalist earlier this year at the India Open, has since then failed to progress past the second round of 10 tournaments. After a close first game loss to the Malaysian, the USA left-hander fought back to take the match 18-21 21-15 21-15. She next takes on home hope Hsu Wen Chi, while in the top quarter, home favourite Tai Tzu Ying faces compatriot Pai Yu Po.

Significant results in women’s singles included Natsuki Nidaira’s 21-19 21-19 win over Beiwen Zhang, and Goh Jin Wei’s 21-11 21-17 result over Komang Ayu Cahya Dewi 21-11 21-17.

In men’s singles, Singapore Open runner-up Kodai Naraoka overcame a stiff test from India’s Mithun Manjunath, 22-24 21-5 21-17, and will next face seventh seed Khosit Phetpradab. Malaysia’s Soong Joo Ven stopped seventh seed Koki Watanabe 21-6 25-23.

♦ Local stars and men’s doubles third seeds Lu Ching Yao/Yang Po Han fell rather tamely to Malaysian duo Boon Xin Yuan/Wong Tien Ci 21-16 21-11.

♦ Mixed doubles third seeds Lee Jhe-Huei/Hsu Ya Ching too fell to Malaysian opponents, losing a thriller to Hoo Pang Ron/Toh Ee Wei 21-23 23-21 21-14.

♦ India’s Tanisha Crasto made two quarterfinals, with Ishaan Bhatnagar in mixed doubles and Shruti Mishra in women’s doubles.
